Appledore

Introduction

The delightful unspoilt fishing village of Appledore has many pretty cobbled lanes with fascinating little shops, inns and art and craft galleries. It faces Instow across the River Torridge and has a long history and association with the sea. Take time to sit on the Quay at Appledore and watch the boats in the estuary, observe the seabirds and, at low tide, the waders in their tireless search for edible delicacies to be found in the mud. In the summer you can take a ferry across to Instow or a trip around the estuary.

Appledore has a thriving modern shipbuilding business, the large covered yards of Appledore Shipbuilders are witness to this continuing skill. The Maritime Museum in the town gives information on Appledore's long association with boat building, a replica of the "Golden Hind" was built here. One of the joys of the area is a fine day spent in a boat sea fishing. Sea bass and mackerel fishing trips are available from Tarka Cruises in Appledore. Song of Appledore
This was recently discovered in an
old edition of the Bideford Gazette
All together everyone!

O Appledore, sweet Appledore!
Green meadows shelving to the shore
A sea of blue that heroes knew
In those proud days of yore

O Appledore, sweet Appledore!
Who has not heard that name before?
And sung thy praise in ancient days,
Three hundred years and more!

O Appledore, sweet Appledore!
Who heard the ancient canon roar?
That roar again, the power of Spain -
Which nothing could restore!

Ah! While I sing, sweet Appledore!
There comes a vision as before
For Drake's sake, the soul of Drake -
To fight for us once more!

O Appledore, sweet Appledore
Thy waves still breast the golden shore,
Thy men of old were ever bold -
Sweet Appledore sweet Appledore

Appledore Talking Map
Adapted from the Bideford Buzz, August 2002

By August 2003, Mark Woolaway will have completed a 36ft long map of Appledore waterfront. With a scale of 1:100, large properties will feature at almost postcard size and small properties a few square inches. Anyone connected with the village is encouraged to write their knowledge of a particular location directly onto the map – that’s the talking bit!

The finished map will be a collective history and current snapshot of the Appledore community - featuring names, dates, details of traditions, events, anecdotes, sayings, photos, newspaper cuttings, deeds and other interesting documents. Once completed, the project may be viewed for free at Appledore library, the Maritime Museum, the Local Studies centre (or by appointment) at the Bideford & District Community Archive.
