Geology & Geography

Devon & Cornwall

Inland geology
The gently undulating inland plateau is cut by small streams which run out to tumble down the high cliffs. Where the sea has cut a section through the rocks which lie under the surface, it is possible to see how the land above has been shaped.

Coastal geology
The coastline around Elmscott Youth Hostel comprises miles of spectacular cliffs and stunning rock formations. The sea here can be very dangerous and the remains of many ship wrecks can be seen along the shore. There is an excellent museum about the sea and coastline at Hartland Quay.

Lundy Island

Lundy Island is a granite outcrop, 52 million years old. It stretches about three miles in length by half a mile wide, and rises 400 feet out of the sea.
